A Garden in the Kitchen

Learning about how plants grow can be as simple as some vegetables and water. It's nice to be able to omit the dirt, especially when you're using your kitchen as a lab! Be creative with your vegetables and you'll be treated to a variety of "greens".

What You’ll Need

root vegetables: carrots, parsnips, turnips, beets, potatoes, etc.
knife and cutting board
paper towels
shallow dish or plate
water

Directions

1. Cut the tops off from each vegetable, about 1 inch thick.

2. Place 2 sheets of paper towels on a plate or shallow dish. Moisten the sheets with water. Place the vegetable tops, cut side down, on the moist sheets of paper towels. Leave beside a sunny window. Check moisture daily and add fresh water when the paper towels start getting dry.

3. After a few days, the vegetables will sprout, looking like a small garden.
