Animal Sponge Puppets

Turn kitchen sponges into puppet characters!

What You’ll Need

soft kitchen sponges
scissors
wiggly eyes
glue
markers
colored paper

Instructions

1. Make 3 cuts into a piece of sponge this way: 2 partial cuts (where you will insert your fingers to make the puppet's mouth move) and one long cut that goes all the way through the sponge, for the puppet's mouth.

2. Cut the sponge into a circular shape. Cut ears and other features from other pieces of sponge and glue into place.

3. Glue or draw on wiggly eyes and other features, using markers or pieces of colored paper.

For a fun change, try cutting different shapes such as rectangles, triangles and squares. Also try putting the partial cuts for your fingers in other areas - for example if you have a sponge that is wide enough you can cut finger holes from the bottom up so the puppet will sit on your fingers.

Get creative with what the puppets will wear and use fabric scraps! This is a project you can get done quickly so don't worry about sewing together a mini-outfit for the puppet - instead cut a piece of fabric and use safety pins to hold in place. By using safety pins you can also change the outfits quickly!
