> Nature Activities Bird Watching with Your ChildrenNature is something we all take for granted. How many times have you been outside with your child and both of you have seen a bird? You and your child probably just passed it off. Why not take some time with your child to bird watch? It can be an accelerating experience for you both.
There are so many different types of birds. Some are seen in abundance like black birds or robins. But what about those birds you see so rarely. Can your children identify any of these birds? Take an afternoon and go out in the woods with your children. Take binoculars with you so your children can see the birds up close. Also take a bird book that describes the many different types of birds and their lifestyles. As you see the birds and identify them talk with your children about these birds. Read to them about their nature, their lifestyles, eating habits, sleeping habits and nesting habits. Your children will be fascinated by what they see, hear and learn about each individual bird. Many birds migrate to the south in the winter time. Much farther south than our United States borders. Point out any of these birds to your children. Explain to them why they go south in the winter. Also be sure to take some bird seed with you. The children won’t be able to actually feed the birds but if they drop some on the ground or a log the birds will come eat it once you have backed far enough way. Be sure to point out the difference of the look of the males and females. Also talk to them about how they care for their young. By the end of your venture your children will be well versed in bird watching and want to do it time and time again. |
