Cactus From a Sock

Incorporating fun makes learning fun. This is a great activity for learning about cacti and the desert! Make your own little cacti but be careful not to get pricked.

What You’ll Need

old socks, preferably green
green paint, if your sock is white
paintbrush
scissors
rubber band
toothpicks
glue
small flower pot or plastic container

Optional: sand or potting soil

Instructions

1. Cut the sock right below the heel. The foot-part of the sock will become your cactus. Stuff it with the part you cut off and, if necessary, another old sock. Close the sock with a rubber band, about 3 inches from the cut edge of the sock.

2. If your sock is white, paint it green and let it dry. If it's green already move on to step 3.

3. Apply glue to the tips of the toothpicks then poke them all over the cactus.

4. Plant the cactus in a small flower pot. If it doesn't stand by itself, pour some sand or potting soil in the pot or container first to give it some stability.

5. Place your sock cactus in front of a sunny window and see how many think it's real!
