Cardboard Tambourine

Choose bells whose sound you like - you'll be hearing them a lot! This is a great 'first instrument' for your preschooler. With just a shake of the wrist your child will be making music and feeling like Carnegie Hall is just around the corner!

What You’ll Need

sturdy cardboard, about 1/8 inch thick
craft knife or sharp scissors
paints
paintbrushes
small round bells (sold in packages at craft stores)
yarn or string
embellishments, such as metallic stickers, etc.

Instructions

1. Cut a circle out of the thick cardboard. With the tip of a craft knife or sharp scissors, make small holes along the entire edge of the circle. Make as many holes as you have bells.

2. If you'd like you may also want to give your child a little handle by cutting a small rectangle in the center of the circle that will fit your child's hand.

3. Paint the tambourine in the desired color. Let dry completely.

4. When the tambourine is dry, attach the small bells by tying each with a piece of yarn or string through the holes you made in Step 1.

5. Embellish the tambourine. Shiny things such as metallic stickers, sequins, glitter glue, etc. look best as the tambourine is being shaken to make a sound.
