Charity Begins at Home

Lending a helping hand - No not with the big helping hand and cooking, but with everyday life in general. There are so many ways for children to give to a charity but so few children know how. What a great Thanksgiving tradition. Why not start it with your children this year?

Charity can be achieved in so many different ways. Maybe your child knows an elderly person in the neighborhood who could use a helping hand. How about someone who can’t afford a babysitter, but just needs to get away for a couple of hours. If this is the case, both you and your child need to speak with this neighbor about ways to help. Find out what is available for your child to do. Decide if the task is something they can handle on their own and if it’s age appropriate.

There are numerous organizations available where your child can volunteer as well. How about a soup kitchen or maybe a homeless shelter? Let them try their hand at helping other children who are involved in Boy Scouts. Girl Scouts or Junior Achievement. What about Big Brother and Big Sister?

Maybe there is a charity that is near and dear to your child’s heart. They can set up a donation table and collect money to help support that charity. A bake or craft sale is a great way for children to receive donations for a favorite charity.

Always remember they can go the local nursing home, Veterans home or even the local hospital. There are many people in these types of facilities that would love to have a child just stop by for a chat.

Whatever you and your children decide to do to help, remember it is for a good cause. Lending a helping hand or even just a smile and warm hello can make a person’s day. It will also put a smile on your children’s faces and a glow in their heart to know they made a difference too.
