Children And A BudgetChildren make and spend money just like we do. It might only be a weekly allowance they receive or maybe they are old enough to have a job. No matter how they make their income it is important to start them down the right road for managing their money.
Start teaching them about a budget and how to stick to it as soon as they begin to make their own money. The younger they are the better. Start their budget out simple. Have an income column and debt column. Be sure their debt column is big enough for them to make note of where their money went. Even if it’s just for a piece of candy they still need to know where their money goes. Also let them know that no matter how they attain their money it’s still income. It might be an allowance or a gift but it’s still income. As they grow their budget will change but if you give them the right tools early they will be able to handle the ups and downs we all encounter with our money. Show them how to adjust their budget as they become older. Show them how to add columns that will help them stretch their money. Be sure savings are included in their budget as well. They may not like the idea but when it comes time to make that big purchase, like a new outfit or maybe even a car someday they will be glad they saved their money. Talk to them about their spending. They need to see that just because they want it doesn’t mean they can afford it. Children can learn by having a budget and sticking to it that there are items necessary to have and then there are items that are just because we want them. Using a budget will help them to learn the difference and see that holding back and saving for the things they want can be a benefit in the end. Having a budget is important to anyone who has any type of income and debt. Sticking to that budget is even more important. By starting your children out early they will learn the meaning of the hard earned dollar and can be proud of how they spend it. Starting them now on a financial future that they can be proud of will pay off later in life. |
