> New Year Activities Children Setting Personal GoalsIn today’s world it can be very difficult to set goals that we know we can accomplish for ourselves. With children and the demands of school, friends, parents and peer pressure it is very important to set goals and to be able to achieve them. A little help and guidance from you as a parent can help your child set realistic personal goals that will help them through their younger years and take them into adulthood with ease.
Personal goals can be very private. Many people are afraid of failure and would rather not share the goals they have set for themselves. Let your children know from the start that it’s ok if they don’t reach all their goals. That is how we learn and strive to be better people. There is no such thing as failure as long as you try to accomplish your goals as best you can. With that in mind, have your child make a list of things they would like to accomplish over the next year. No matter what they put on the list remember they are trying to better themselves and that is the reason to set goals. Although you don’t want to dash their dreams you also have to make sure the goals they list make sense for them and their circumstances. Sit down together and go over the list. Explain to your child any things on their lists that are not accomplishable in the next year. Tell them to start another list for goals they see in the future for them. Now that they have a goal list that they can really work from talk to them about the ways to accomplish these goals. Ask them if they have ideas in mind to get where they want to go. Discuss ways to set them on the right track and in the right direction. Also tell them you are always there if they have questions or stumble. Whatever goals your child sets they need to be the one who sees them through. Don’t let them give up even if they feel there’s no way they can do it. Setting goals and working hard to see those goals become reality are all a part of life. Children need to know they can accomplish just about anything they put their minds too. With a little guidance you can set your child on a path that will see them through many avenues for the rest of their lives. |
