We all hear and sing Christmas carols during the holiday season, but do your children know the carols you used to sing when you were their age? And do they really understand the meaning behind some of the others they sing?

Teach your children old carols that you used to sing and explain the songs lyrics to them so they can gain a true understanding of them.

For example, we all remember King Wenceslas, but do your kids know the song and if so, do they know he was a giving king who treated the people of his kingdom well? Unfortunately King Wenceslas was killed by his jealous brother who wanted to rein over the kingdom himself?

Take the song, "Away in a Manger" for another example. Unless you live on a farm and maybe not even then, do you children realize that the manger that baby Jesus laid in was not actually a bed, but a trough for animal food?

Once your children understand some of the meanings of certain Christmas carols, they will show a deeper appreciation for many things in life and that's never a bad thing.
