It is tradition to find just the right pumpkin and then have all the fun in carving it. With small children this can be a hassle sometimes. They want to help but little hands and knives aren’t the best combination. So, why not let your younger children decorate their pumpkin instead of carving it this year?

Take your smaller children to the pumpkin patch or the local grocery store to pick out their pumpkin. It doesn’t matter if it’s large or small, round or lopsided, it’s the one they see and just can’t live without.
There are many types of pumpkin decorating kits available now. You can purchase one of these, if your child doesn’t want to take the time to create its own designs. Many children like to do the work but don’t want to take the time to come up with the ideas so this is one choice you have.
The other way of decorating a pumpkin is more creative for your child. Have them draw their design on a piece of paper. Then using paint, construction paper, old clothes such as scarves, hats ect. You can let them go to work. They can decorate their pumpkin however they want. If they use construction paper for the eyes, nose and mouth you can attach them with straight pins. Just remind your child if they use paint it can’t be removed very easily if they don’t like what they have done.
See decorating a pumpkin can be fun, fast and easy for your smaller children. If they want to put a light in their pumpkin they still can. Just cut the top out for them let them clean it out and set the candle inside. It won’t show through the pumpkin very well but it will light it up and your child will be thrilled. Not carving a pumpkin can be just as much fun and your smaller children will enjoy the fact they did it themselves.
