What You’ll Need

dry egg shells
paints and paintbrushes
glitter glue, sequins and other decorative materials
markers
glue
string

Instructions

There are many ways something can be created from an eggshell. You can find them painted and dyed into beautiful works of art. We are going to create an eggshell Christmas ornament in this holiday craft!

1. Carefully wash and dry the egg shells. Remove the thin film that covers the inside of the egg shell.

*This first instruction is if your eggshell is broken. If you want to work with an unbroken eggshell, keep reading the rest of the details.

2. Paint the inside and outside of the egg shells in Christmas colors, such as red, green and yellow. Let dry completely. Handle carefully!

3. When the egg shells are completely dry, make them sparkle using glitter glue, sequins and other decorative materials. You can also add designs using markers.

4. Glue a piece of string to the top of the egg shell and let dry. Hang the egg shell ornaments on your Christmas tree!

If you want to work on an eggshell that is not broken here is what you need to do.

1. Poke a hole in the top and bottom of the egg. Make the hole large enough to put a small stick in, small as in a small dowel or even a toothpick. Once the yolk has been broken you can blow through the shell to get the egg out.

2. Wash and dry the egg. Once it is completely dry you can paint your egg! Add glitter or sequins or whatever decorations you want to make it sparkle.

3. Glue a string to the egg so you are able to hang it on your Christmas tree. It could be a bit tricky but if you had a long enough needle you could thread through to the other side and secure the thread to the bottom of the egg with lightweight beads and then create a tie at the top.

The art of working with eggshells has a long tradition. A few holiday ideas would be to paint Santa Claus on it, a snowman, flowers or even a wrap around scene. This would take time and practice though, so if the craft is one you wish to do with your children keep in mind how tough you want the project to be.
