Make Flash Cards to Teach ColorsColors make up our world. Without them everything would be pretty dull and boring. Teaching children basic colors is an important part of their learning process. Finding ways to teach them can be easy and fun to do. Using flash cards is one way to accomplish this. Making your own is easy to do and gives you the convenience of knowing exactly what your child is learning and how. How to Play* White poster board* Basic color markers * Stickers Start with a piece of poster board. Cut a template out the size you want your flash cards to be. Don’t make them too small or the children will have a hard time holding on to them and maybe even seeing them. Also if you make them to big they can be overwhelming to your child. Try to make them just a little larger than a regular playing card. Once you have your template cut out pieces of poster board the size of your template.
After the cards are cut out use the markers to make your basic color. Make the area large enough for the children to see and understand. Make a square, rectangle, circle or triangle and then color it in with the marker. Be sure the color stands out and is bright enough to peak their interest. Once you have the color on the card find a sticker that represents that color. If you have green try to find a green frog or maybe a green pepper that you can place on the card. Association is very important in teaching children their colors. If they can see green matches the grass they can then associate the color with that item and in turn, remember that the grass is green. Use the cards often to help your children learn their basic colors. Be sure they are normal everyday colors and not colors that derive from the primary ones. This will confuse your child and slow down the learning process. Once they have the basic colors down pat then you can venture into the blue greens, lavenders, reddish oranges, etc. and give your child a world full of color and beauty. |
