Fluttering Butterfly

Hang a bunch and watch the pretty butterflies!

What You’ll Need

construction paper in desired color
scissors
pipe cleaners
markers, stickers, glitter glue and other decorative materials
yarn, string or ribbon

Instructions

1. Cut the construction paper into a square about 8 inches long on each side. Make 1-inch accordion folds along the entire length of the paper.

2. Pinch the accordion folds together and tie a pipe cleaner around the center of the paper. When you let go, the sides of the paper will form the butterfly's wings!

3. Pull up the ends of the pipe cleaner and curl under to make antennae.

4. Decorate the butterfly's wings with markers, stickers, glitter glue and other decorative materials.

*Tip: If you are working with younger children you may want to decorate the paper before folding. Be sure to let any glue dry before you make any folds!

5. Tie a piece of yarn, string or ribbon around the pipe cleaner that's knotted around the center of the butterfly. Hang up your butterfly and watch it flutter in the wind!

These are fast and easy to make! Have a supply on hand and make a variety of sizes. You can easily transfer this project into making a mobile or a wind chime (without the chime!) to hang.

Try making butterflies out of a various papers to get a different effect ~ you can make Christmas butterflies from Christmas wrap, pretty butterflies from scrapbook paper, delicate butterflies out of tissue paper. The ideas are endless!
