Grow Some Beans

We happened upon this activity quite by accident when my girls were at the kitchen table making bean mosiacs. They remembered seeing someone grow flower seeds in a plastic cup inside of a wet paper towel. They begged me to give it a try. Of course, I am thinking "Sure the beans that I have had in our pantry in a zip lock back are going to grow in a paper towel." And sure enough, they did!

What You’ll Need

* Bag of beans (we used kidney and black eyed peas)

* disposable plastic cup

* couple of paper towels

Directions

You will simply need to wet the paper towels and wring out the excess water. Then place approximately 5 seeds in the folds of the paper towels. We did it closer to the top than the bottom of our cups so that the new baby sprouts had a chance.

Set the cups in a sunny window and dampen the towels as they become dry. You should start to see new sprouts within just a few days.

We transplanted the sprouts into a pot outside, and they really started to grow. Unfortunately, we did our little project at the end of summer, and we had our first freeze before we actually got any beans on our plants. But the girls still had a wonderful time watching them grow!
