Help Your Preteen Decorate Their Room

Your preteen has discovered it’s not much fun being considered the baby anymore. They want to have their own space and they want it their way. Why not redecorate their bedroom? This will give your child the sense of freedom and responsibility they crave, without having to let go too much. Here are a few tips to get started.

Start by setting a limit on the amount of money you want to spend. Be sure your child is aware of this amount and make them stick to it. That will show your child that yes, it’s their room to be redecorated their way, but you are still basically in charge. It will also start them on their way to learning responsibility for how to spend money.

Next, you will need to pick either a theme or a color scheme. Let your preteen make a list of the things that interest them. Also they should add colors to that list. Be sure to take your preteen to pick out paint swatches and material remnants. This will help them to see what matches and what doesn’t. Also purchase a few decorating magazines that have ideas for redecorating preteen bedrooms. This will help your child see how things go together and the different styles of furniture and accessories.

Last but not least, let your preteen help you with the redecorating their room. It may not end up being perfect or exactly the way you want it, but remember it is their room. They need to feel comfortable and happy in their own little space. So enjoy it and be proud of the accomplishment you completed together.
