> Kwanzaa Activities Making a Kwanzaa ScrapbookKwanzaa is a time of celebration but it is also a time of learning. From year to year during those seven days children learn about their heritage and it’s importance. Making a scrapbook will not help your children to remember their heritage but will also give them memories of the special moments the celebration brings. What You’ll Need* Poster board* Hole punch * Black, red and green yarn * Construction paper * Pictures of the seven symbols * Pictures of previous celebrations * Pencil, pen and markers * Glue InstructionsMaking their scrapbook will be easy. Filling it up will be even easier for them. Start with poster board. It can be white or a bright color that stands out. Cut the poster board down to the size your child would like their scrapbook to be. Remember that they will need two pieces of poster board the same size, as these will be the cover for the scrapbook. After you have determined the size and the poster board is cut your child will need to make three holes in both pieces. Using the hole punch place a hole at the top, bottom and center of the outside edge of both pieces of poster board. This is how the scrapbook will stay together. To decorate the outside of their scrapbook children can glue pictures of the seven symbols of Kwanzaa to the outside. If they are artistic they can actually draw the pictures onto the poster board and then color them with markers. Next are the pages of the scrapbook. Again you may need to cut the construction paper to fit the scrapbook depending on the size your child has chosen. Place as many pages into the scrapbook as you would like. It will be easy to add more pages as the years go by if necessary so don’t worry if you think there are not enough pages for everything. Once you have chosen the amount of pages use the hole punch to place three holes in the construction paper in the same places you did with the poster board. Place the construction paper in between both pieces of poster board and tie black, red and green yarn through the holes to keep the scrapbook together. As for what goes on the pages that is your child’s choice. Pictures of previous celebrations, hand written notes of things they have learned and experienced in the Kwanzaa celebration from year to year are a few of the things they may want to add to their scrapbook. No matter what they add it will be theirs and the memories will be abundant. Enjoy seeing what your child has learned, how they feel and especially how much fun they have had during their special time of year. |
