Learning about Kitchen AppliancesTake your children on an appliance tour of your kitchen by preparing foods together using each one. Tell them the names of each appliance and what they are for. Then, show them how to safely use each one. Soon your children will learn to be a big help in the kitchen. A good appliance to start with is the toaster. For example, you can have them prepare waffles. Have your child place a waffle in the toaster. Then tell them what setting your toaster goes on for waffles. Explain what happens if you cook it too long and that it could even start a fire.
Now, move on to the microwave. Let them prepare a TV dinner. They can follow the directions on the package. Go over some of the do's and dont's of the microwave while the food is cooking, such as never put metal in the microwave. Remind your child the food will be hot when they remove it. So, be sure to use an oven mitt and let your food cool before you eat it. They can try out the blender next. Have them make a milk shake. Show them the different settings and give them examples what they would be used for. Most important, tell them to never forget the lid and never put their hand inside the blender. Try some of the manual appliances too. First have your child open a can with a hand held can opener. Then, slice an apple with an apple slicer, but remember to supervise carefully. Be creative with each thing you show your child. Please, remember to stress SAFETY, SAFETY, SAFETY. Once you have finished your tour of appliances, you and your family can enjoy the delicious foods you and your child have prepared together. |
