Learning to Count With Fingers and Toes

With ten fingers and ten toes you can teach your child to count the basic numbers while having fun. Children are always playing with their toes so why not let them play while teaching them something they will use for the rest of their lives.

Start by showing your children they have 10 fingers and 10 toes. Count each one and as you say the number help them pull that finger or toe up, This will help them associate the numbers with the amount of counted.

Sing songs with them as you count their fingers. One Little, Two Little Indians is a fun game to play while learning to count. Have them close their hand and as you sing the song help your child pull out a finger for each little Indian. Before you know it they will be running around the house singing and counting their own fingers.

Play games with them while counting their fingers and toes. Remember the little piggy game? Start with 1 little piggy went to market, 2 little piggy stayed home and so on. Make up your own words to include all 10 toes. The kids will not only get a kick out of you counting their toes and playing a fun game, but also out of how you changed it around to fit both of their set of toes.

Another way to teach with fingers and toes is in the bathtub. As they wash have them wash each finger and each toe. As they do, count how many they have washed. Not only does this help to teach them how to count; it also helps to make sure they have washed all those little body parts they always seem to forget.

Teaching your child to count doesn’t have to be time consuming or frustrating. Make it fun and before you know it your child will be running around the house counting everybody’s fingers and toes.
