Make a Flag for the Fourth of July

The Fourth of July is the holiday we celebrate our independence from England. This year have your children make their own flags for the Fourth of July parade. Explain to your kids the history of the flag and what the different parts represent.

What You’ll Need

* Red, White & Blue Fabric
* 1/4 inch dowels
* Fabric Glue or Needles & Thread for older children
* Scissors

Instructions

First, you will need to get the materials to make the flag. Find some inexpensive red, white and blue fabric from the fabric store. Use Quarter inch dowels to make the pole. Your children will also need either fabric glue or needles and thread.

Next, have them assemble the flag. They will need to cut seven red stripes, six white stripes, a blue square, and fifty small stars. Then they will need to assemble the flag with either the glue or needle and thread. Then assemble the dowel as the pole.

While your children are making their flags, explain to them what the different parts of the flag stand for. All thirteen stripes represent the thirteen original colonies. The red stripes represent hardiness and valor. The white stripes represent purity and innocence. The blue square symbolizes vigilance, perseverance and justice. There are fifty stars to represent the fifty states of the United States of America.

Your children will learn a lot from making their own flag. The information you give them will help them better understand what our flag means. Your kids will also be very proud of what they have made.
