Making a Valentine Scroll

Children like to put a little something special, goofy, and fun in their crafts. Doing something different that no one else has thought of helps their imagination, along with giving them a sense of satisfaction. Try helping them make a scroll to use as their Valentine’s Day cards this year. It’s pretty easy and they will have a great time making it... and giving it!

What You’ll Need

* 2 empty paper towel rolls
* Scrunched up newspaper
* Sheet of white paper
* Glue
* Markers, crayons and colored pencils
* Valentine stickers
* Old Valentine cards
* Red or pink ribbon

Instructions

Start by filling their paper towels rolls with the scrunched up newspaper. This keeps the roll from collapsing while they are trying to work with them. Have them place one hand on the bottom of the roll so the newspaper doesn’t come out the other end.

With the glue, attach one end of the white paper to one of the paper towel rolls. Have them glue the paper completely around the roll. This will ensure that it stays attached when rolled out. The other end of the paper should be attached to the second paper towel roll.

Once they have the paper attached and the glue has dried completely they can make their scroll. Using markers, crayons and colored pencils they can draw pictures, create sayings and of course sign their name.

Pictures and words cut from old Valentine cards work well on a scroll. With a little bit of glue they attach right to the paper. Just be sure it’s not heavy cardboard material or the scroll won’t roll properly when it is closed. Stickers are also a nice added touch to their scroll. If they are making it for mom and she’s into cooking they can attach stickers of food or kitchen items to personalize their scroll for her. If it's for a dad who loves sports, stickers of golf, baseball, footballs, etc. work great.

When the glues dries it's time to roll the scroll together. Roll both ends to the middle of the scroll. This will put equal lengths of paper on both rolls. Now tie it with a ribbon. If it’s for Dad or Grandpa tie it with a red ribbon. Grandma or Mom get a pink ribbon.

This unique Valentine card made by your child is one you can treasure for a lifetime. Let them show you how much they care with something a little different and a lot of fun to create.
