Milk Carton Buildings

Use milk cartons to make your own cardboard town and help reduce the trash in our landfills!

What You’ll Need

empty milk cartons
tape
scissors or craft knife
paints and paintbrushes
markers

Instructions

1. Wash and dry the milk cartons. Tape the top shut because this makes a nice roof, you may also want to cut off the top tabs of the carton so the top of the roof doesn’t stand up. Cut off the bottom of the carton.

2. Paint the carton in the desired color, depending on what type of building you want to make. For instance, paint it red to make a barn or gray to make an office building. Let dry.

3. When the milk carton is dry, use markers to add windows, doors and other features.

*Tip: Cut the windows out and cut on two sides of the door so it can swing open. Your children could then use small dolls to play in the buildings.

4. Make several of these and create your own town. Use the same technique on different types of cardboard boxes.

If you used several sizes of cardboard boxes, a town could be created, and then also stored inside of each other. It would be easy to create a few streets worth of buildings and set the boxes in your front or backyard and your kids would be able to play with them in a larger area. You could also mix and match containers – use milk cartons, various sizes of cardboard boxes and other shaped boxes. Often we can buy oatmeal or chips in a round container, use those for different shaped buildings!
