Molten Crayon Paper Weight

Harness the heat of summer to make this "molten crayon" covered paper weight! This one-of-a-kind paper weight is really a work of art AND science. You'll want to melt several of these as an experiment to see how long it takes at different temperatures. And because once you see how beautiful they are, you'll want to create them for everyone.

What You’ll Need

smooth rock
old crayons, preferably light colored
paper or plastic bag
old newspapers

Instructions

1. Wash and dry your rock. Take the wrappers off the old crayons. Put the crayons in a paper or plastic bag and smash them into smaller pieces with your rock, a rolling pin, or the bottom of a heavy can.

2. Lay the newspapers outside where they will get plenty of hot summer sun. Place your rock on top of the newspapers. Sprinkle the pieces of crayon on top of the rock in any pattern you'd like. Leave for a few hours to let the crayons melt. (For a science experiment keep track of the time of day and the time it takes to melt.) After they have melted, bring the rock back indoors to allow the colors to cool and harden up again.

3. Use as a paperweight or decoration. Just a little reminder of the power of the sun's heat!
