Peruvian Burial Mask

This is a good activity for children who are learning about the country Peru.

What You’ll Need

cereal box
scissors
pencil
white glue
aluminum foil
plastic cup
yellow paint
paintbrush
tape

Optional: colorful beads, sequins and other decorative items

Instructions

1. Cut the cereal box into a mask shape that ends right below the child's chin. Place the mask over the child's face and mark where the eyes are. Cut the eyes out with scissors.

2. Cut out eyebrows, a nose and mouth with the leftover cardboard from the cereal box. Stack pieces together to make them thicker. Glue the features to the mask.

3. Cover the entire mask with white glue. Cover the entire mask with aluminum foil. Don't ty to make it very smooth; some wrinkles are ok. Poke the aluminum foil where the eyes are.

4. Mix equal amounts of yellow paint and glue in a plastic cup. Mix thoroughly. Paint the mask. While the paint is wet, attach beads, sequins and other decorative items.

5. Tape a pencil to the back of the mask to make a handle so the child can hold the mask up to his/her face.

This is a craft project that could be made assembly style so you will have a few masks to play with and learn about. Cut the cereal boxes all at once, the facial features all at once and so on. Make sure you cut enough eye brows, noses and mouths to stack them together so they will still be able to be seen once the aluminum foil is attached to the mask. Decorate the masks you make different from one another.
