Read to Younger Siblings

Children like books and younger children love to be read too. But where do you find the time? Let your older children do the reading.

Start by talking with your older child about taking a little time each day to read to their younger sibling. The can do it after school, right before dinner or at bedtime. Explain to your child it needs to be a time that will work for them everyday.

Be sure your older child is aware of the type of books that you will allow. They should also understand that smaller children have a small attention span. So books must be age appropriate.

Explain to your older child that this is a time for just the two of them. Younger children crave and need the attention of their older sibling. This is a way for them to spend time together constructively. It will also help your younger child with learning to listen and your older child some patience and understanding.

Let them have their space. No matter what time of day or where they pick to read at, keep your distance. Talk to them after they are finished about what they read, but let them broach you. This is their time together and by being together they can grow a bond that will last a lifetime.
