Scavenger Hunt In Your Own Backyard

You don't have to leave your yard to teach your child about nature. It is all around them. All you need to do is help them find it.

Take a good, long look around your yard. Make a list of the all the things you see. Look for different birds, bugs, and other animals. Write down several flowers, trees, and weeds for them to find.

Give them the list and turn them loose. Have them dig up the earth to find bugs and worms. You can give them a jar to collect creepy crawly things and a magnifying glass to further inspect them. You can give your child a bag to collect several kinds of leaves and flowers. Allow your child to look for birds and other wildlife through a pair of binoculars.

After you have completed the scavenger hunt, talk about the things they found. Ask your child what their favorite part was. See if there was anything they discovered that was not on the list.

Your child will learn that nature is all around them. All they have to do is look out their window or turn over a rock. Soon your kids will be looking for things in nature wherever they go.
