Setting Goals That Benefit Others

Part of growing up means becoming a productive member of the community. Work is one way of accomplishing this but helping others in need is a way a child can start to learn how important this is as an adult. When setting goals children need to include the outside benefits. Helping others is just the way for them to realize this.

There are many ways children of all ages can help others in the community. The first goal they need to set is to figure out specific ways to lend a hand to others. It might be just visiting an elderly neighbor, cutting grass or even picking up trash in a yard. As children get older they can take their goals to new heights such as helping at a soup kitchen, helping at a toy drive or even babysitting. The list can go on and on.

Talk to your child about the benefits of setting at least one goal for the New Year that will benefit someone else. Have them make a list of things they might be able to handle. Go over the list with them and help them choose a goal that will work for them. One that they will be able to accomplish. It might be a one-time goal or one they can do throughout the year.

Help them to understand why it’s important to set these types of goals. Be sure they know how good it will make them feel to do something that helps someone else. This will help to build your child’s self esteem and encourage them to be a productive and responsible person.

By setting a goal that will benefit others your child will be well on the way to knowing how important the community, neighbors and friends are to them. They will feel confident in themselves and in the work they have accomplished. Who knows maybe you can even help them in their endeavors. What a way to build a happy helping family together.
