Setting Goals With Younger Children

Starting children out setting goals at a young age is not as difficult as you might think. Toddlers and preschoolers are eager to learn and helping set goals will start them on a lifetime of seeing their dreams come true.

Reading is a positive goal for all toddlers. Set a goal for them to learn their ABC’s or count to 10. Once they can recite these from memory then they can stretch their goal to being able to identify them in words. Before you know it they will be able to put together words and even read a few short sentences.

As a preschooler they can then begin to print the letters and numbers on their own.

Learning new games and songs can also be a great goal for toddlers. Not only will this help them to learn words, phrases, how things go together and learning to play with others, but it will start building their self-esteem. It will also help them in understanding that making a goal, sticking to it and seeing it through can be fun and entertaining.

Preschoolers have many goals they can achieve. This is a good time to start them on some long-term goals as well. Just be sure they don’t take too long getting there. This could cause frustration and a sense of non-achievement.

Try setting goals like learning to spell their name by themselves. This is also a good time for them to learn their address and phone number. Learning to zip zippers, button their own buttons and learning to tie their shoes are great goals for preschoolers. They will be proud of themselves when they reach these goals. They will also learn how much fun it is to take care of their own needs. Goals can make great growing experiences for preschoolers.

Whatever goals are set for toddlers and preschoolers make sure they are fun, exciting, easy to achieve and most of all a learning experience. This will set the stage for a lifetime filled with goal setting, building self esteem and understanding that they can do anything they set their minds too.
