Shadow Art

Part of the fun of creating shadows is the funny shapes that appear. When you talk about shadows and the different forms they take when the light is at different angles, you are teaching your children important lessons as well as having some fun! Use this project to discuss what has to happen in order for the groundhog to see his shadow on Groundhog's Day, and talk about the legend of the groundhog seeing his shadow and how that predicts when spring will arrive.

What You’ll Need

Flashlights
White Construction paper
Black Construction paper
Pencil
Tape

Instructions

Tape white paper onto the wall and have children hold their hands in front of it while shining the flashlight on to create a shadow print. Trace their outline shadows. Move the flashlight and shine the light at different angles to change the shape of the shadow.

*You can also let them sit in a chair and trace the outline of their heads.*
