The Star of David

The exact origin of the Star of David in relation to Jewish identity is unknown. There are many ideas as to why the Star of David is important to the Jews including its significance of the number seven and the Menorah. The Star of David is a six-point star with a central middle.

It has also been said to represent the names of the seven angels preceding the Mezuzah and the Shield of David is placed beside the name of each angel. Creating the Star of David can be easy for your child to do and will give them a piece of their own tradition to cherish during the Hanukkah celebration.

What You’ll Need

* Star of David template from the Internet or Library
* 6 wooden Popsicle sticks for each star
* Glue
* Scissors
* Yarn
* Paint

Instructions

Use the template so the children can see exactly how to make their own Star of David. There are numerous places on the Internet where you can print out these types of templates for free.

Use three of the Popsicle sticks and glue them together to make a triangle. Take the other three sticks and glue them together to make a second triangle. This is pretty easy to do but be sure the set the glue and allow it to dry completely before continuing to the next step.

Now take one triangle and place it with the point going up. Lay the second triangle on top of the first one upside down. Glue the areas where the triangles meet. Again be sure to set the glue and allow it to dry completely before painting.

Your children can now paint their Star of David using the colorful paints you have provided. If paint is not something you want to get involved with try using glitter glue or even markers to create the star.

Once the star is colored and completely dry take a piece of yarn cut to the size you need for where you want to hang the star and run it through one of the points on the star. Tie the yarn together into a bow. Now your child has a Star of David to hang on the wall, in their window or even in their bedroom.
