Tell the Story of St. Valentine

Most people celebrate Valentine's Day without ever knowing why. This Valentine's Day share the story of St. Valentine with your child. It will help them appreciate why we celebrate this holiday.

St. Valentine was a priest. He lived during the time Emperor Claudius ruled the Roman Empire. It is believed that he helped many people out of love. One story states he was imprisoned for helping Christians escape persecution. Another story is about St. Valentine marring young couples even though the Emperor made it illegal for possible soldiers to marry. His remains are in Dublin, Ireland. His casket is displayed at a church there every Valentine's Day.

You may wish to take your children to your local library and have them find a book that better explains who St. Valentine was and what all he did for his people. You can also have them do some research on the internet. They will learn more if they do the research themselves.

Set aside some time every Valentine's Day to share this story with you children. Valentine's Day is a day to show others how much we love them. This way they will know why we celebrate this special day.
