A Thanksgiving Play

It’s the night before Thanksgiving and the turkey’s in the oven, your husband is having a fit over wanting to eat the pies, your children are bored and running around like crazy people and you just want to sit down and relax. Why not start a night before Thanksgiving tradition and have your kids put on a play? This gives your kids something to do, keeps your husband out of the kitchen and gives you the chance to sit on the sofa with your feet up. Not to mention, everyone is having a good time watching the festivities.

How to Play

The play can be about The First Thanksgiving or anything related to Thanksgiving. During the day have your children read up on what Thanksgiving is about and how the Pilgrims and Indians celebrated their day. Let them go through clothes in the closets and make their own outfits.

Gather craft materials so they can make items they will need for their play, such as decorations, food or anything they can think of to set the stage for their play. Let them use their imaginations. You might surprised what they will come up with.

Tell the kids exactly what time you want their play to start. This way they have an idea of how long they will need to get their play together. It will also help you in not having to hear “Are you ready yet?” or “When can we start?” while trying to finish up your night before activities.

Make sure Dad knows exactly what is going on too. If you have a video recorder he can make sure that it’s charged and ready to use. If you would rather take pictures then he can have the camera up and going in time for the play. Be sure Dad is the one who takes the pictures or records the event. This will keep him busy and out of those pies.

Now you just relax and enjoy the show. This could end up being the play of all plays. Who knows what your children may come up with? Should you decide to make this a yearly tradition maybe next year your Thanksgiving play will be with wizards, dragons and a princess. Who knows as long as the kids are having fun, you are relaxing and Dad is keeping busy somewhere besides in the food for the next day!
