The Easter Story

We tend to lose sight of the true meaning of Easter. We need to let our children know that Easter is not really about a giant bunny, eggs, or candy. Easter is about the resurrection of our Lord and Savior. Whether at home or at church, have the children read and discuss the real story of Easter.

First, let the children take turns reading parts of the story. When they actually take part in the reading, there is less chance of getting distracted. You can take scripture right out of the Bible, or find a good children's book that is more on their level (check you church or local library).

Next, allow them to put the story in their own words. This way you can see how they individually interpret the story. You will be surprised to see how it affects your child.

You can also discuss the reason we celebrate Easter by having a sunrise church service. It is a way to remember the morning of the first Easter Sunday that the women went to Jesus' tomb and found it empty. It is not only a mystery to most children, but many adults too.

Most important, be prepared to answer questions. If there is one thing we as parents have learned; children always have questions and lots of them. If you don't know the answer, don't make something up. Let them know it is a good question and you are not sure, but you will try to find an answer. Your children will appreciate your honesty. It is nice for them to know that even adults have a thing or two left to learn.
