Making Valentine Cakes

Children think cooking is just the greatest. It can be easy and a lot of fun especially when it’s for a special occasion like Valentine’s Day. Here are a few ideas for helping your children make Valentine cakes for you, their grandparents and even a teacher, neighbor or friend.

What You’ll Need

* White cake mix recipe or box mix
* White icing
* Red food coloring
* Red and pink decorating gel
* Red, pink and white sprinkles
* Candy Conversation Hearts
* Heart shaped cake pans

Directions

Start by helping your child bake his or her cakes. Go by the directions of your recipe or the directions on the boxed mix. It might be easier to make one large cake for the household and then smaller cakes to give to other people. Bake the cake in the cake pans as directed. Allow them to cool before icing.

After the cakes have cooled remove them from the pans onto wax paper. This will make it easier for the children to work with. Take the icing and divide it into three separate bowls. Leave one white and tint the other 2 with the red food coloring to make pink and red icing.

Now let the kids have it. They can ice the cakes and decorate them with the sprinkles and candy. Let them use the decorating gel to put cute sayings or even people’s names on them such as Grandma or Dad. Let them have fun and show their imagination when they decorate the cakes. It’s their way of saying how much they care. When they have the finished product they can hand them out and give a special gift from the heart to the people they care about.
