Visit a Pumpkin Patch

Ah the pumpkin patch…Remember when you were a child and your parents took you to the pumpkin patch to find just the right pumpkin? What fun that was. Why not start a family outing that you can continue for years to come by visiting a pumpkin patch in your area.

Remember the Halloween cartoon “It’s The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown?” The look on their faces when they went to the pumpkin patch to find the biggest and best pumpkin was priceless. The look on your children’s faces can be the same. The awe in their eyes when they see all those pumpkins of every shape and size is something you will never forget. Their little legs going a 100 miles a minute to find just the right pumpkin and their minds racing with ideas on how to create just the perfect pumpkin face once they get their pumpkin home is unforgettable. Every child and parent should be allowed to live those feelings and expressions at least once in their lifetime.

Start by looking for a pumpkin patch in your area. Check the local phone book or hop on the Internet to see what you can find. Many of today’s pumpkin patches include more than just pumpkins. In trying to locate the perfect place to take your children check out what else may be offered. Some may include hayrides, petting zoos with farm animals, pony rides, gift shops and much much more. Find one that is suitable for you and your children.

Remember that you will be outside and that it is fall. Fall weather in most areas means jackets and hats. Be sure your children are dressed for the weather but are still comfortable. Spending the day at a pumpkin patch should be fun and exhilarating, not cold and miserable. Dress your children in layers so if they become too warm they can remove some of their clothing and still be comfortable.

Some places offer food or snacks at exhibits. For instance they may have an exhibit on how to make Caramel apples or popcorn balls. They may even show you how to make pumpkin pies or pumpkin bread. Most of the time these types of exhibits offer to sell the food they are preparing. Most also offer drinks. Check to see if the patch you are going to offers these types of things. If not take along a cooler filed with snacks and drinks. This will help curb a child’s appetite leaving more time to spend having fun.

No matter what be sure to let your child take their time picking out the right pumpkin. It may be small, large, round or lopsided. Just remember it’s their pumpkin and that’s the reason you went. Believe it or not your child will have the right pumpkin in mind and they probably already know exactly what they want to do with it when they get home.
