What is Veterans Day?

Have your children ever asked you that question? Have they ever wondered what all the fuss is about? Do your children know what a Veteran is and why they are so special? All children should be aware of what Veterans are and what they stand for. Without them our children would not have the life they live today.

Veterans Day is celebrated on November 11th. It is the day we honor the men and women of World War l, World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, Desert Storm and now the war in Afghanistan and Iraq. Whether we believe in any of these wars or not we still owe it to these men and women who leave their homes and families to do a job no one really wants to do. To honor them is something special and our children need to be aware of that.

There are many ways to honor our Veterans on their special day. If you have a local Veterans of Foreign War Post take your children to visit the vets there. You and your children can volunteer to help at the Post. They are always in need of someone who can sweep a floor or mow the grass. What a way to give thanks for all they have done.

Many cities have Veterans hospitals. Take your children to visit some of the vets there. Most of these men or women have no one in their lives to visit and spend time with them. Bake some cookies and head off for the day. Just a warm smile and a hello will be enough to make a vet happy. Spending the day visiting and listening to some of their stories will not only make their day, but will give them more memories to tell.

Try taking your children to a Veterans Day parade. There they will see veterans from the Air Force, Army, Marines, Navy, Coast Guard, and National Guard as well. They will probably see them in their dress uniforms and will have an idea of how these vets lived in their military life. Many of these vets will stop and talk to your children and give them a chance to ask questions about what they see and hear during the parade. Kids love parades and when it gives them a chance to learn about their heritage it makes for a wonderful time.

Whatever you decide to do for your children to help them understand what Veterans Day is all about be sure they know that these men and women fought for our country and for the freedom we all experience today. Ask them to be thankful for each and every Veteran they come across that day and the ones who never made it home. Teach them to continue to say their prayers for the ones who have yet to return home as well.
