Whittling Can Be Fun for Boys

Boys like to work with crafts too. Too often older boys won’t do any crafting because they believe it’s too girlish. One craft that can fun is whittling. Older boys can make just about anything they like with a piece of wood, a sharp knife and a little help from Mom or Dad.

What You’ll Need

*A solid piece of balsa wood
*Sharp wood working knife

Instructions

Balsa wood is a soft wood that can be found in Central or South America. You can find it right here at home in the local hardware stores or online. Be sure to get a good solid piece for your son’s craft.

He will also need a wood working knife. You can also find these online or in a department store or sporting goods store that sells hunting equipment. Be sure he keeps the knife sharp. You may want to help him with this part if he’s not experienced with knife sharpening. It won’t take him long to pick up though if he has a little practice.

Let him decide what he wants to whittle. Start him out with something relatively easy. A walking stick is a great way to begin. Keep him focused on his ability and let him know that as he practices he will become better. This will encourage him to start small and work his way up.

Stick close until he gets it down pat. Being safe is a big part of this craft. He will need to understand he is responsible for making sure the knife is kept out of others reach and that he’s using it the way it’s supposed to be used.

If you’re not sure about whittling yourself you can go online or to the local library and do some research that will help you both with this great craft. Before you know it you may have a wood working genius in your home. As his experience greatens and he becomes older he may want to take up making things such as furniture. This will require some power tools and other equipment along with much more responsibility. If your son enjoys working with wood it might be worth investing in.
