Write Valentine's Day Poems

Children enjoy telling stories and making believe. Their little heads are full of ideas and the more we encourage their imaginations the better. Poems are easy for kids to create. This year, have your child come up with poems for their homemade Valentine's Day cards.

What You’ll Need

* Construction paper
* Colored pencils

Instructions

Using the construction paper children can make the card they would like to give. There’s no need for cutting or gluing with this type of card. The poem is what counts when this card is received. Simply fold the construction paper in half either way you'd prefer.

If they would like they can draw a picture on the outside of the card. This gives the card a little extra pizazz. Have them draw pictures that go along with their poem.

Now let them create their poem. It should be in their own words. Whether it rhymes or not doesn’t matter. If it’s only 2 lines long, that’s okay. Just be sure it’s their words.

If they are having trouble with understanding how a poem works give them some books that are filled with poems. If they can’t read, read a few poems to them so they get the idea. Most children know about poems from nursery rhymes so they should haven’t too much trouble.

Once they are done you will have a masterpiece on your hands. It’s great to encourage children to use words when they want to express themselves. The best part is the laughs and the tears you’ll be brought to when you read those precious poems.
